Winter Guide

Canadian Winter Survival Guide ❄️

Stay warm, safe, and happy during your first real Canadian winter.

The 3-Layer Rule

The secret to staying warm isn't one giant coat — it's three smart layers working together.

  • Base layer: a moisture-wicking top (merino wool or synthetic) to pull sweat off your skin.
  • Middle layer: an insulating layer like fleece or a light down sweater to trap warmth.
  • Outer layer: a windproof and waterproof shell to block snow, sleet, and biting wind.

Essential Gear to Buy

Invest once in the right gear and you'll be comfortable all season.

  • Waterproof boots with a deep, grippy sole for icy sidewalks.
  • Insulated, water-resistant gloves (mittens are even warmer).
  • Thick wool or thermal socks — cotton is a no-go in winter.
  • A winter coat rated for at least -20°C, ideally with a hood.
  • A warm toque (beanie) and a scarf or neck warmer.

Winter Wellness

Days get short and sunlight gets scarce, which can quietly drain your mood and energy.

  • Take a daily Vitamin D supplement (1000–2000 IU is common — check with a doctor).
  • Get outside during sunny hours, even for a 15-minute walk, to beat the winter blues.
  • Keep your space bright — open blinds during the day and consider a warm light lamp.
  • Stay hydrated and moisturize — indoor heating dries out skin fast.
